Knowing what to plant, when, and how much is difficult for even experienced gardeners. Verdura’s vegetable garden designs have been developed to guide gardeners of any experience level in turning their raised beds into productive, intensively planted gardens from early spring until late fall. In mild or moderate climates (zone 8 or lower), many plants will grow over the winter months as well.
Developed by a professional chef, our garden planting plans are based on a wide variety of cuisines and culinary interests. The plans feature:
- Easy, intuitive square foot gardening techniques, which divide garden frames into individual square feet and specify ideal spacing for each plant in the garden.
- Succession planting techniques ensure a continuous harvest and optimal timing for each crop in your garden, with spring, summer and (in some cases) fall plantings.
- The planting plans include spacing, plant height, recommended plant supports (such as trellises or cages), and likely harvest dates based on planting date and typical maturity rates.
- 4'x8' versions are available in both north-south and east-west orientations.
- Beneficial and companion plants like marigolds are included to increase your garden’s health and beauty.
- Most planting plans include perennials, many of which may be grown as annuals if preferred.
- Includes as a bonus a section with general organic and square foot gardening hints and tips.
Note the plans are NOT suitable for conventional row gardens; they are developed as square foot garden plans for 4'x4' or 4'x8' raised beds. They can be doubled - or two can be planted side by side - to accommodate larger raised bed gardens.

All-American Victory Garden
Spring and summer plantings. Requires a 4' wide trellis or other vertical support.
Available options: 4'x4' (#4001), 4'x8' with north-south orientation (#4010) and 4'x8' with east-west orientation (#4011).
Loaded with heirloom tomatoes and all-American vegetables like peas, cabbage and green beans, this productive garden will provide you with a variety of popular vegetables from mid-May until early October. All versions include carrots, onions, beets, lettuce, radishes, parsley and marigolds. The 4'x8' versions add cucumbers and sweet peppers as well.

Italian Farmhouse Garden
Late spring, summer plantings. Requires a 4' wide trellis or other vertical support.

Classic Italian cooking ingredients thrive in these gardens, including pole beans, basil, zucchini and Roma tomatoes. Sweet peppers, chard and perennial herbs round out the bounty. Also includes trailing rosemary, sage and nasturtiums. The 4'x8' versions add heirloom slicing tomatoes and replace pole beans with bush beans.

French Potager
Spring, summer and fall plantings. No vertical supports required for the 4'x4' garden. Both 4'x8' gardens require a 4' wide trellis or other vertical support.

No French home would be without its potager, the classic kitchen garden where ingredients for homemade soups and salads are grown. These compact versions grow an impressive list of vegetables and herbs year-round, finishing up in October by planting over-wintering shallots. Also includes cabbage, beets, lettuce, bush peas, carrots, spinach, leeks, radishes, tarragon, chives and parsley. The 4'x8' versions add cucumbers, Roma and heirloom slicing tomatoes, and onions.
